Airflow or mass flow sensors, measure the volume of air flowing through them and convert it to frequency or voltage. In automotive applications they are used to monitor the air flow entering the intake manifold so that the engine control unit (ECU) can meter the appropriate rate of fuel to inject into the combustion chambers.
